Blato

Blato is one of the oldest towns on the island.
Old stone houses and citadels are scattered over 7 hills. Through the centre of the town runs the oak-tree lined main road. The mayor of Blato ordered the planting in 1912, following the example of many European cities, which he frequently visited. The inhabitants are traditionally farmers. In the past there were many craftsmen. In the 16th and 17th centuries carpenters were highly regarded especially in the manufacture of church furniture.

The inhabitants of Blato are proud of their Christian heritage. Surrounding the town there are many small churches and chapels. The oldest is St Kuzma and Damjan from the 6th century.
The parish church of All Saints is mentioned in the early middle ages. It has been renovated and rebuilt many times. Today the church and steeple are from the 17th and 18th century.
On the main altar there is a painting ordered from the Venetian renaissance artist Girolama De Santa Croce- All Saints from 1540.
Gifts of gold and silver, received during the centuries have formed one of the most important votive collections in Dalmatia. Unfortunately only a small amount of these treasures can be seen in the parish church. There are plans to open a votive museum to display all riches of the history of Blato.

During 2003, Pope John Paul II pronounced Sister Marija Petkovic, from Blato, Blessed.
Many pilgrims visit her shrine in Blato today. She concentrated her work on widows, mothers and orphans and their right to a dignified life. She based her work on the statute of Korcula in which women had the same rights as men when it came to inheritance, managing property and decision-making.

During the summer months most of the inhabitants rent apartments to tourists or engage in some kind of similar venture. Prižba and Prigradica are famous tourist destinations.
